This silly guy is getting so big! I’ve taken pictures of him for every birthday he’s had so far and it’s so great to watch him grow and interact with the camera differently each year. I’m actually going to tell a little story for this post because he is an especially important subject for me.
For those that don’t know, he’s my nephew. So obviously there’s that. But more than that, he’s especially important to this business thing I’m doing. I’ve been taking pictures since high school, and (even though I’ve always said to myself ‘this is what I want to do with my life’) I’ve always had something else going on. During college I let myself get a little lost and distracted for quite a while and, while I was still taking pictures, I had lost my passion and drive. Noah’s 1st birthday session came right around the same time I re-focused on photography. The weeks leading up to that session I dove back into exploring the craft, and finding the photography community again. I was picking up my camera for more than just paying gigs and it no longer felt like work. So, I went into that session with a completely different mindset. Afterwards I was able to look at the photos and, for the first time in a long time, I felt really good about we got. I was able to see a real difference in what I was delivering and it validated the work I had put in leading up to it. Usually I would drive my wife crazy by constantly tearing down and being overly critical of my work, but this time I couldn’t wait to show her, and the family.
I’ve felt that way after every session since.
I’ll never stop learning and improving, but it’s no longer because I ‘hate my work’. I’m incredibly grateful for this little guy’s smiles every year. It’s usually the first one of the season and it sets the tone for the rest of the year. Here are a few from the first session since that one was before I had this blog:
And here he is now!
